  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.33 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoons nutmeg
  • 0.13 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 0.13 teaspoons ground cloves
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 cup cold unsalted butter cut into cubes
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 0.25 cup heavy cream
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.5 cup chocolate chips (optional)

Egg Wash

  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and salt.

  • Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together pumpkin puree, heavy cream, and egg.

  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Stir in chocolate chips if using.

  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat into a 0.75-inch thick disc. Cut into 8 wedges.
  • Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Whisk together the egg wash ingredients and brush over the scones.

  • Let cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

These scones are best enjoyed fresh, but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
