  • 2 cups milk whole milk recommended
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.25 cup butter melted

Preparation Steps

  • Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter.
  • Arrange the cubed bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are saturated. Press down gently with a spatula if needed.
  • Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the casserole.
  • Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Remove the plastic wrap and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the casserole is golden brown and set in the center. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.
  • Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Serve warm with your favorite toppings like maple syrup or a dusting of powdered sugar.

Notes

This casserole can be assembled the day before, making it perfect for busy mornings. For a richer flavor, you can use a combination of different types of bread, like challah or brioche.
